Documentation of the Swiss Federation of Jewish Communities (SIG)

The Press documentation includes reports, articles and news items mainly from Swiss newspapers and periodicals from around 1990 to the present year. It is available, from Monday to Thursday, for journalistic investigation and research as well as to students. However, it is necessary to make an appointment by letter or 'phone.

The documentation covers the following main topics:

Generalities - Jews, anti-Semitism/racism, etc. in various countries.

A detailed list of topics is available on request.

The historical archives of the Swiss Federation of Jewish Communities has been opened by the Archives of Contemporary History at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETHZ) and made accessible in accordance with the Archive Regulations for Research. Co-operation on archiving matters began in the 80s. In 1995, the SIG and ETHZ set up the "Foundation for Jewish Contemporary History at the ETH Zurich for securing and opening up historical sources in Switzerland". Within the Archive of Contemporary History, it promotes the activities of the Documentation Centre for Contemporary Jewish History and maintains the following historical archives of the Swiss Federation of Jewish Communities:

  1. SIG Archives (1902-1985)
  2. SIG Documentary Archives (Archives of the Jewish Press Centre, Zurich), Archives of the "Jüdische Nachrichten" (Jewish News – JUNA); the records of the "Nuremberg War Criminals Trials")
  3. Archives of the Association of Swiss Jewish Welfare Organisation (VSJF) 1936-1990.

Altogether, 300 running metres of records, reports, correspondence and other SIG documents on every possible aspect of the history of Jews in Switzerland have been made available for consultation in the Archive of Contemporary History and have been made accessible for inspection by researchers in accordance with contractually stipulated conditions.
