Statement by the Swiss Federation of Jewish Communities (FSCI)

It is certainly legitimate and politically wise that Switzerland diversify its imports and in particularly its gas supply.

What seems less comprehensible to us, is that of all the various potential suppliers, it chooses a country like Iran.

Whereas the international community has decided to raise the level of the sanctions imposed on that country because of its persistent efforts to acquire nuclear weapons, Switzerland sends out a false signal to the world by signing an agreement with it for some 20 billion francs.

Even if our country were not violating the letter of the decision taken by the UN to impose sanctions on Iran, it is certainly not respecting its spirit. And who can guarantee that Iran, especially if it feels its back against the wall, will not turn off the tap?

Our country – an ardent defender of human rights – is supporting a country where they are constantly and systematically ridiculed, a country which officially encourages negationism and anti-Semitism. The Jews of Switzerland feel directly concerned.

The Swiss Federation of Jewish Communities is very disappointed by this attitude, which it does not understand.
