European Jewish Congress
The European Jewish Congress (EJC) was founded in 1986. The EJC is the political representation of the European Jewry. Presently the EJC brings together the national Jewish organizations from 37 European countries. It works closely together with the WJC, which it considers its head organization. Naturally, the Swiss Federation of Jewish communities (SIG) is one of its members.
The major competencies of the EJC are:
- Representing the joint interests for the entire European Jewry
- Support of any kind for the State of Israel
- Safeguarding of the essential role of Jewish culture within the joint European cultural heritage
- Promoting the constructive rapprochement of all citizens of Europe
- Contributing towards the inclusion of the Eastern European countries into the European Union, while maintaining the democratic values and the interfaith dialog, which are its undisputed corner stones
- Surveillance of those values and protest actions on the highest levels against their misuse
- Informing and educating the public with the goal of suppressing any recurrence of anti-Semitic, racist, anti-foreigner, and other extreme ideologies
- Coordination of the activities of other Jewish organizations in Europe
